The Prophet Said About Gifts

تَهَادُوا تَحَابُّوا‏

“Give gifts and you will love one another”

The Prophet | Al-Adab Al-Mufrad (594)

This short but powerful hadith from the Prophet (pbuh) captures one of Islam’s most beautiful and practical teachings about building love between people. In just two words, he established a simple yet profound principle: that giving gifts is a direct path to strengthening bonds of affection and closeness. This is not about the value or size of the gift, but about the thoughtfulness behind it and what it represents. For anyone looking to understand how Islam encourages love and kindness in relationships, this hadith offers one of the clearest and most actionable pieces of guidance from the Prophet (pbuh).

The beauty of this teaching lies in its simplicity and its deep understanding of human nature. When someone receives a gift, no matter how small, it creates a feeling of being remembered, valued, and cared for. It softens hearts, removes grudges, and opens doors to forgiveness and reconciliation. The Prophet (pbuh) understood that love between people does not always grow on its own; it needs to be nurtured through deliberate acts of kindness. A gift does not need to be expensive or elaborate. It could be as simple as sharing food with a neighbour, bringing something small for a friend, or surprising a family member with a thoughtful gesture. What matters is the sincerity behind it and the intention to bring joy to another person’s heart. In a time when relationships can become strained by misunderstandings and distance, this prophetic advice serves as a gentle reminder that small acts of generosity can heal and strengthen the ties between us.

Allah says in Surah Al-Hashr of the Quran, “And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul, it is those who will be the successful” (Quran 59:9), teaching us that overcoming selfishness is a mark of true success in the sight of Allah. As Al-Wadud, Allah is the Most Loving and places love between the hearts of His servants, and as Al-Karim, He is the Most Generous and loves to see generosity reflected in the actions of the believers. When a Muslim gives with a sincere heart, they are not only strengthening a relationship but also following a sunnah that brings them closer to Allah.
