The Quran Says About Corruption
“When he turns away, he strives in the land to spread corruption in it and to destroy crops and offspring; and Allah loves not disorder.”
This verse from Surah Al-Baqara exposes a type of person who appears righteous on the surface but whose true nature is revealed through their actions. When they turn away from people, they work to spread corruption in the land, destroying crops and lives. Allah closes the verse with a firm declaration: He does not love corruption or those who cause it. It is a verse that warns against hypocrisy in all its forms and reminds every Muslim to judge character not by words but by the impact a person has on the world around them. For anyone seeking to understand Islam’s stance on corruption, injustice, and the destruction of the environment, this verse is one of the most direct and powerful statements in the Quran.
The mention of destroying crops and offspring carries enormous significance. Crops represent the livelihood and sustenance of people, while offspring represent the future of humanity. When both are targeted, it means the corrupt person is attacking life itself, both in the present and in the generations to come. This verse applies not only to physical destruction but to every form of corruption that harms society: financial exploitation, environmental damage, spreading hatred, and tearing apart communities. Islam holds the earth and its resources as a trust given to humanity by Allah, and anyone who abuses that trust is committing one of the most despised acts in His sight. The verse also serves as a mirror for self-reflection. It challenges the believer to examine whether their own actions, when no one is watching, are building or destroying. A person’s true character is not shown in public speeches or impressive words, but in what they do when they have power and no one is holding them accountable.
Allah says in Surah Al-A’raaf of the Quran, “And do not cause corruption on the earth after it has been set in order. That is better for you if you are believers” (Quran 7:85), reminding us that the earth was created in a state of balance and it is our duty to preserve it. When a believer lives with awareness that Allah sees every action, they become a force for good rather than a source of harm, protecting what Allah has entrusted to humanity rather than destroying it.
