Allah Says About Excellence Repaid

ہَلۡ جَزَآءُ الۡاِحۡسَانِ اِلَّا الۡاِحۡسَانُ ﴿ۚ۶۰﴾

“The reward of goodness is nothing but goodness”

Quran | 55:60

This verse from Surah Ar-Rahmaan is one of the most concise yet deeply powerful statements in the entire Quran. In just a few words, Allah poses a rhetorical question that answers itself: is there any fitting reward for goodness other than goodness in return? It is a verse that encapsulates the entire principle of divine justice and generosity in Islam. No good deed goes unnoticed, and no act of kindness is ever wasted. For anyone seeking reassurance that their efforts to do good will be recognised and repaid, this verse provides the most direct and beautiful promise from Allah Himself.

The simplicity of this verse is what gives it such extraordinary depth. It applies on every level of life. Between people, it means that those who treat others with kindness, fairness, and generosity deserve to be treated the same way in return. It encourages a culture where goodness is met with gratitude rather than taken for granted. But the greater meaning lies in the relationship between the believer and Allah. When a person devotes their life to doing good, worshipping sincerely, helping others, and striving for excellence in their character, Allah’s response is not merely equal but far greater. He does not simply match goodness with goodness; He multiplies it in ways that no human mind can fully comprehend. This verse also serves as a quiet but firm warning: if goodness is rewarded with goodness, then what can be expected for those who choose the opposite path? It is a verse that invites deep reflection on how we live, how we treat others, and what we can expect from the One who sees every deed, no matter how small.

Allah says in Surah Az-Zalzala of the Quran, “So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it” (Quran 99:7), confirming that not even the smallest act of goodness will be overlooked. As Ash-Shakur, Allah is the Most Appreciative, who rewards even the tiniest act of goodness far beyond what it deserves. When a believer lives with this verse in their heart, every kind word, every generous gesture, and every sincere intention becomes a seed planted for a harvest that only Allah can measure.
