The Magnificent

The Supreme Glory and The Greatest. His greatness surpasses human understanding, and He is far above His creation. His throne extends over the heavens and earth, and nothing burdens Him. He alone deserves all exaltation, glory, and perfection.

Name and Meaning

Al-Azim (ٱلْعَظِيمُ) translates to “The Magnificent One”, “The Tremendous”, or “The Supreme Glory.” This name signifies that Allah is the One whose greatness is beyond comprehension. His reality is too vast to be fully grasped by the human mind. He is infinitely greater than His creation, and His throne (symbolic of His knowledge and authority) extends over the heavens and the earth, and their care does not burden Him. He is the One deserving of exaltation, glory, and purity from all imperfections.

Root and Linguistic Significance

Derived from the Arabic root ayn-za-mim (ع ظ م), this root includes meanings such as:

To be great, large, big

اَللّٰہُ لَاۤ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا ھُوَ ۚ اَلۡحَیُّ الۡقَیُّوۡمُ ۬ۚ لَا تَاۡخُذُہٗ سِنَۃٌ وَّلَا نَوۡمٌ ؕ لَہٗ مَا فِی السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِی الۡاَرۡضِ ؕ مَنۡ ذَا الَّذِیۡ یَشۡفَعُ عِنۡدَہٗۤ اِلَّا بِاِذۡنِہٖ ؕ یَعۡلَمُ مَا بَیۡنَ اَیۡدِیۡہِمۡ وَمَا خَلۡفَہُمۡ ۚ وَلَا یُحِیۡطُوۡنَ بِشَیۡءٍ مِّنۡ عِلۡمِہٖۤ اِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ کُرۡسِیُّہُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالۡاَرۡضَ ۚ وَلَا یَـُٔوۡدُہٗ حِفۡظُہُمَا ۚ وَہُوَ الۡعَلِیُّ الۡعَظِیۡمُ

“Allah — there is no God but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting and All-Sustaining. Slumber seizes Him not, nor sleep. To Him belongs whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. Who is he that will intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what is behind them; and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He pleases. [✲]His knowledge extends over the heavens and the earth; and the care of them burdens Him not; and He is the High, the Great.”
