Al-Qabid

The Constrictor

The One whose will always prevails. He enriches and makes poor, withholding or limiting as He sees fit. Al-Qabid takes all souls at the time of death and extends His hand to believers for repentance. He constricts sustenance, life, and hearts. In contrast, Al-Basit is the One who expands and grants abundance through His Generosity and Mercy.

Name and Meaning

Al-Qabid (ٱلْقَابِضُ) translates to “The Withholder”, “The Restrainer”, or “The Constrictor.” This name signifies that Allah is the One who withholds and constricts provision, mercy, or life as He wills. His actions are based on divine wisdom, serving as tests, guidance, or protection for His creation.

Root and Linguistic Significance

Derived from the Arabic root qaf-ba-dad (ق ب ض), this root includes meanings such as:

  • To take in the hand, grasp, or seize
  • To withhold or make scarce
  • To restrain or hold back

This root highlights Allah’s ability to hold back or limit aspects of creation in a balanced and purposeful way.

Allah’s Role as Al-Qabid

As Al-Qabid, Allah may restrict sustenance, opportunities, or even the lightness of the heart. These moments are not signs of punishment but often serve to awaken the soul, bring people closer to Him, or build patience and faith. The one who restricts is also the one who releases.

Mention in the Quran

A clear example is found in Surah Al-Baqara (2:245):

مَنۡ ذَا الَّذِیۡ یُقۡرِضُ اللّٰہَ قَرۡضًا حَسَنًا فَیُضٰعِفَہٗ لَہٗۤ اَضۡعَافًا کَثِیۡرَۃً ؕ وَاللّٰہُ یَقۡبِضُ وَیَبۡصُۜطُ ۪ وَاِلَیۡہِ تُرۡجَعُوۡنَ
“Who is it that will lend Allah a good loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.”
Quran | 2:245

This verse shows that Allah is in full control of all giving and withholding, and He does so with perfect wisdom.

A Lesson for Believers

Reflecting on Al-Qabid reminds believers that every hardship and delay has meaning. Times of constriction are opportunities to turn inward, evaluate, and grow spiritually. Trusting that Allah is also Al-Basit (The Expander) gives hope that every difficulty will be followed by ease. It encourages patience, contentment, and reliance on Allah’s greater plan.
