Al-Khafid
The Abaser
The One who lowers whom He wills through His justice, and Ar-Rafi, the One who elevates whom He wills through His blessings and generosity.
Name and Meaning
Al-Khafid (ٱلْخَافِضُ) translates to “The Abaser”, “The Reducer”, or “The One Who Lowers.” This name signifies that Allah is the One who lowers and humbles the proud, the oppressors, and the rebellious. He chooses whom to humble or soften, and He decides to raise or weaken people, giving them honour or taking it away.
Root and Linguistic Significance
Derived from the Arabic root kha-fa-da (خ ف ض), this root includes meanings such as:
- To lower, weaken, depress
- To make humble, abase
- To soften, make easy, facilitate
This root highlights Allah’s ability to humble or reduce status, whether physically, socially, or spiritually.
Allah’s Role as Al-Khafid
As Al-Khafid, Allah humbles those who are arrogant or unjust. He brings down their status, power, or pride to remind them and others of His supreme authority. This action serves justice and wisdom, showing that true honor is in submission to Him.
Mention in the Quran
A clear reference is found in Surah Al-Al-Waaqia (56:3):
This verse shows Allah’s control over who is honored and who is humbled, and that status is in His hands alone.
A Lesson for Believers
Reflecting on the name Al-Khafid teaches believers to stay humble and to avoid arrogance. It reminds them that all power and position come from Allah and can be taken away at any moment. Recognizing Allah as the One who lowers encourages sincerity, compassion, and striving to please Him in all that we do.
