Allah Says About the Qualities of the Believers
“Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble and focused in their prayer, those who turn away from useless talk, and those who give zakat.”
These opening verses of Surah Al-Muminoon describe the essential qualities of the believers who have truly succeeded in the sight of Allah. Success in Islam is not measured by wealth, status, or worldly achievement, but by the condition of the heart and the sincerity of one’s worship. Allah begins by declaring that the believers have already attained success, then describes three powerful traits that define them: humility in prayer, turning away from idle and useless talk, and fulfilling the obligation of zakat. For anyone striving to understand what it means to be a true believer, these verses lay down a clear and beautiful foundation.
Each quality mentioned addresses a different dimension of a Muslim’s life. Khushoo in prayer means being fully present before Allah, with a heart that is humble, focused, and aware of the greatness of the One being worshipped. It transforms salah from a routine act into a deeply spiritual conversation with the Creator. Avoiding vain talk reflects a believer’s discipline over their time and attention, choosing to engage only in what is meaningful and beneficial. And giving zakat represents a believer’s willingness to purify their wealth and share it with those in need, recognising that everything they own ultimately belongs to Allah. Together, these three qualities cover worship, speech, and generosity, forming a complete picture of a balanced and mindful believer.
Allah says in Surah Adh-Dhaariyat of the Quran, “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Quran 51:56), reminding us that the ultimate purpose of our existence is devotion to Allah. As Al-Quddus, Allah is the Most Pure and loves purity of heart, worship, and wealth in His servants, and as Ash-Shakur, He is the Most Appreciative, never allowing any good deed, no matter how small, to go unrewarded. When a believer strives to embody these qualities, they walk the path of those whom Allah Himself has declared successful.
