The Prophet Said About the Believer’s Character
الْمُؤْمِنُ غِرٌّ كَرِيمٌ وَالْفَاجِرُ خِبٌّ لَئِيمٌ
“The believer is simple and generous, but the extravagant is deceitful and ignoble.”
In this hadith, the Prophet (pbuh) draws a striking contrast between two types of people based on their character. The believer is described as simple and generous, someone who is open-hearted, trusting, and noble in their dealings with others. The wicked person, on the other hand, is described as deceitful and ignoble, someone driven by cunning and selfishness. This teaching offers a powerful insight into how Islam views personality and moral conduct, making it clear that true honour lies not in being the cleverest or most strategic, but in being sincere, kind, and giving. For anyone wanting to understand the ideal character of a Muslim, this hadith paints a clear and beautiful picture.
The word used to describe the believer’s simplicity does not mean naivety or foolishness, but rather a kind of innocence that comes from having a clean heart. The believer does not spend their time plotting against others, looking for ways to deceive, or calculating how to take advantage of people. Their generosity is not just with wealth, but with their time, their words, their forgiveness, and their willingness to think well of others. This is what makes them noble in the sight of Allah. In contrast, the wicked person may appear clever and successful on the surface, but their character is hollow because it is built on manipulation and greed. The Prophet (pbuh) is teaching us that a believer’s strength lies in their integrity, not in their ability to outwit others. In a world that often rewards shrewdness over sincerity, this hadith is a reminder that Allah values the purity of the heart above all else.
Allah says in Surah Ash-Shu’araa of the Quran, “The Day when there will not benefit anyone wealth or children, except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart” (Quran 26:88-89), making it clear that on the Day of Judgement, it is the condition of the heart that will matter most. As Al-Karim, Allah is the Most Generous and loves generosity in His servants, and He honours those who live with sincerity rather than deception. When a believer chooses simplicity and kindness over cunning and greed, they align themselves with the character that Allah loves most.
