Allah Says About Mercy Through Rain

“And He it is Who sends the winds as glad tidings before His mercy, and We send down pure water from the sky”

Quran | 25:48

In this verse from Surah Al-Furqaan, Allah draws our attention to one of His most visible and everyday blessings: rain. He describes how He sends the winds as glad tidings before His mercy, and then sends down pure water from the sky. This is a powerful reminder that the natural world around us is not random or meaningless, but a carefully designed expression of Allah’s care for His creation. For those who reflect on the signs of Allah in nature, rain is far more than a weather event; it is a direct act of mercy from the Creator that sustains all life on earth.

The imagery in this verse is beautifully layered. The winds arrive first as carriers of good news, announcing the coming of rain before it falls. This sequence itself teaches the believer to recognise the subtle signs of Allah’s mercy even before it fully arrives, building hope and anticipation. The water is described as طَهُورًا, meaning absolutely pure and purifying, which points not only to its physical cleanliness but also to its spiritual significance. Water in Islam is a means of purification for the body through wudu and ghusl, and a symbol of life, revival, and renewal. Just as dry, barren land is brought back to life by rain, a heart that feels spiritually dry can be revived through the mercy of Allah.

Allah says in Surah Qaaf of the Quran, “And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest” (Quran 50:9), reinforcing that rain is not just water but a blessed provision from above. As Ar-Rahman, Allah’s mercy encompasses all of creation without exception, and as Ar-Razzaq, He is the ultimate Provider who sustains every living thing through means we often take for granted. When a believer pauses to reflect on something as simple as rainfall, they find in it a profound reminder of Allah’s endless generosity and love.
