Prophet Yunus (AS) was sent to call the people of Nineveh to Allah, but when they refused to believe, he left them in frustration without the permission of Allah, assuming he was free to depart. He boarded a ship, which was soon caught in a violent storm. To lighten the vessel, lots were drawn to cast someone overboard, and the lot fell upon Yunus (AS). He was thrown into the raging sea, where a great fish swallowed him whole, and he found himself in the crushing darkness of its belly, beneath the depths of the ocean.

Scholars have reflected on why this short prayer is so powerful. It combines three of the greatest elements of supplication: pure tawhid, declaring that there is no god but Allah; tasbih, glorifying Allah and declaring Him free of all imperfection; and humble confession, admitting one’s own wrongdoing.
