Allah Says About Patience

“Be patient over what they say, and remember Our servant David, the one of strength. Indeed, he was always turning back to Allah.”

Quran | 38:17

This verse from Surah Saad combines two of the most important qualities a believer can possess: patience in the face of criticism and a heart that constantly turns back to Allah. The command to be patient over what people say is directed at the Prophet (pbuh), but it applies to every Muslim who faces mockery, hurtful words, or opposition because of their faith. Alongside this command, Allah points to the example of Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) as a source of strength and inspiration. For anyone dealing with harsh words or negativity from others, this verse offers both practical guidance and a powerful role model to look up to.

What makes this verse especially meaningful is the way Allah describes Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him). He is called a servant of great strength, yet that strength is immediately paired with the quality of being one who always turned back to Allah. This teaches us that true strength is not about being hard or aggressive, but about having the inner resilience to remain patient while keeping one’s heart soft and connected to Allah. Prophet Dawud (peace be upon him) was a king, a warrior, and a prophet, yet his greatest quality in the sight of Allah was not his power or authority but the fact that he constantly returned to his Lord in devotion, repentance, and gratitude. This combination of outer strength and inner humility is the ideal the Quran sets for every believer. When people say hurtful things, the natural response is to react, retaliate, or withdraw. But this verse offers a better path: absorb the pain with patience, and channel that energy into drawing closer to Allah.

Allah says in Surah Al-Baqara of the Quran, “O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient” (Quran 2:153), showing that patience and turning to Allah are the two greatest tools a believer has during difficult times. As As-Sabur, Allah is the Most Patient, and He loves to see patience reflected in the character of His servants. When a believer endures harsh words with dignity and responds by turning their heart back to Allah, they follow a path walked by prophets and loved by their Creator.
